Freeze Frequently Asked Questions
What is a nickname/channel freeze?
A nickname/channel freeze is an action
used by an IRC operator (IRCop) to disable a user from
gaining access to their nickname and controlling their
channel. This action is used when a user or founder
has abused the network rules and policies and should
only be done as a last resort, after warning the user
and founder accordingly. When a nickname is frozen,
any channels founded by that nickname are also frozen.
Why do IRC Operators freeze nicknames/channels?
Nicknames and channels can be frozen
for a number of reasons. The most common reasons include
warring, mass advertising, cloning, flooding and services
abuse. While those are the most common reasons, they
can be, and are, frozen for other reasons which violate
the network rules and policies, to review these rules
and policies please check WebChat's MOTD.
Why was my nickname/channel frozen?
As per the above question, if your
nickname/channel has been frozen it is because you have
violated network rules. You probably have a pretty good
idea why they are frozen as we will generally warn you,
per other methods, before using the freeze command.
In any case, simply send us an e-mail to freeze@webchat.org
or join #admin.closures and we'll be happy to tell you
why your nickname/channel was frozen.
How long are nicknames/channels frozen for?
As a general rule, the first time
a nickname/channel is frozen it will be for 7 days.
For repeated infractions, nicknames/channels may be
frozen for 14 and then 21 days. In some instances nicknames/channels
may be frozen for more or less days than listed above.
My friend's nickname/channel was frozen, can you tell
me why?
For privacy and security reasons,
we will only disclose the freeze reason with the nickname
owner and channel founder. There are NO exceptions to
this policy, please do not ask.
Who froze my nickname/channel?
We do not disclose the name of the
particular operator who froze your nickname/channel.
There are NO exceptions to this policy, please do not
ask.
When will my nickname/channel be thawed (unfrozen)?
It really depends on the circumstances
of the freeze. If you want to know how long your nickname/channel
will be frozen, simply send us an e-mail to freeze@webchat.org
or join #admin.closures and we'll be happy to tell you.
Will you freeze EXAMPLE and their channel #EXAMPLE for
me? They keep breaking the rules!
We do not freeze nicknames/channels
on request. If you believe a user or channel is breaking
a rule, you should report it to any IRC Operator or
to the appropriate help channel. Flooding, clones and
warring should be reported to #admin.floodhelp or floodhelp@webchat.org.
Mass Advertising should be reported to #admin.massads
or massads@webchat.org. Drone channels should be reported
to #admin.security, etc.
