Guffs Rant
This
month's rant starts on a philosophical
note. What they hell is it with
failed boy/girl bands and reformation?
Have they become biblical all
of a bloody sudden? First, it
was Take That. Then the world
was introduced to the the on-going
debacle of Boyzone & Ronan.
The 'will they-wont they' affair.
The jury, it would appear, are
taking their time to debate
this one. Then, our worst fears
were confirmed. Yes, the All
Saints are going to get
back together and record a new
album. At least TT had the good
grace to keep it to stadiums
and, thus far, have kept away
from the recording studio. My
fingers, toes and every other
crossable body part will remain
crossed. And if they dare murder
another tune by the Chilli's,
I think I'll cry! My worst fear,
though, remains to be relaised.
So far spices Posh, Sporty,
Baby, Scarey and Ginger have
not managed to put their petty
squabbles behind them, and to
this day they refuse to reunite.
For that, alone, I am glad.
East 17 are apparently on the
comeback trail though. Just
keep Brian Harvey away from
slow-moving cars. And don't
expect a cover of 'Crush' by
Jennifer Paige anytime soon!
New Music
Scene
On the live front I was lucky
enough to manage to blag a ticket
to the David Ford gig at the
Tunnells the other night, supported
by the surprisingly good Duke
Special irish band, but
if you call them a folk band
they'll probably kill you... I
managed to get a copy of their
EP Your Vandal (which
is now signed) and a quick chat
with the man himself. He has
dreadlocks and looks a bit mental,
but has a great singing voice.
Respec', etc... As for David
Ford, the man is a genious.
His set was something else,
the man is a one man band. His
set was electric and was highlighted
by a song started off by the
taping of a type-writer. Genious!
Sampled and looped, before he
hit the accoustic guitar. It
too was sampled, and looped,
before he got on the vocals.
A nice melody - you get the
idea. Looped. Layer after layer
of musical genious, built up
to the delight of the cloud
and climaxing with the striking
of piano. Brilliant.
I've Been listening to one
or two oldies in the last few
weeks. So, if you're a
fan of nostalgia, here's a couple
of suggestions. Generally, there's
no theme to these recommended
tunes but this month two annoyingly
catch songs have both been used
to promote various brands of
car. So here we go, the part
of the rant I like to call 'Gone,
but not forgotten' Note none
of the performing artists have
neccessarily died on us..
Brian May - (Everything I
do is) Driven by you - Used
to be used in the Ford ad's.
But we can't slag him just for
that. It's definately one for
the car - ironic eh! Crank it
up. Loud - and buy a bloody
ford, if you must :) 'You know
I love you but you drive me
crzy...' written about my last
car, I'm sure!
The Lightening Seeds - Marvellous.
Used to promote the old Espace
if I remember rightly..which
I don't, but my goldfish-like
memory doesn't stop this being
one fine tune. Another for the
collection of loud driving-esque
tracks. Belt it up and roll
the window down.
Ones to watch...
I have something to confess.
There I was the other night,
sat at work with a cd in my
hand. I knew I shouldn't have
played it, but sadly the matter
was beyond my control - the
song had to be played,
even though it wasn't the kind
of thing I'd usually air.. Yes,
it's Chico Time, or something.
I thought the record would be
shit, and to a point it is.
But its actually quite catchy.
And I wouldn't be surprised
if it's number one by the time
you're sat reading this rant.
Dont say you weren't warned!
