What is abuse?
Abuse is when a user knowingly or not does any malicious
action that causes harm. Here at WebChat, we try to
suppress such things from occurring. As a user on WebChat,
you are given the PRIVILEGE, not right though that is
a common misconception, to be on this network. If you
abuse the privilege, we take it. We try to make this
network as pleasant as we can for all the users. All
users are potential customers, and we will strive to
give them a good impression about us, even if that means
ridding the network of abusive users, and even Opers.
What happens to abusive users?
Abusive users are dealt with in a variety of ways. One
of the most common is akill. If a user harasses/threatens/floods
or something of that sort, we try to rectify the situation
accordingly. Severe abusers can be banned permanently
from this network. Make sure you're not one of those.
If that case reaches this height of severity, we will
call/email the user's ISP and have their internet account
terminated, which HAS happened before.
Is Abuse preventable?
There is no real answer to this question. Abuse comes
from a variety ways. Like flooding services, taking
over channels, harassing other people, or just flooding.
Though it may not be preventable, we can fight it, and
keep the number of abusers at a low. Users are more
than welcome to report abusive users.
How do I report abusive users?
You can email WebChat-abuse@webchat.org, join #Spiderslair
and talk to an operator that is available to assist
you, or talk to one in private. Be sure to have logs
handy. If the user is harassing you, use /ignore, or
/silence. The user has to have been a nuisance to more
than you. We CANNOT verify your accusation without logs.
Sometimes logs are forged and they aren't reliable,
but we try to get things straightened out in the end.
What about abusive Opers?
Abusive Opers are also not tolerated. Just because they
are handed an O:line doesn't mean they are immune to
the rules. If you think an Oper has abused their power,
email Oper-abuse@webchat.org,
or find out the admin of the server that Oper opers
on and report it to his/her admin.
What is services abuse?
Services abuse, is when you abuse the privilege of using
our services. (i.e. Chanserv, Nickserv, and Memoserv)
You can abuse services in a variety of ways. Flood registering
nicknames, registering impersonation channels constantly,
taking over nicknames/channels, Memoserv flooding, flooding
services intentionally and many other malicious actions.
What can I do to prevent myself
from flooding services do I don't abuse them?
Reduce the amount of Performs (for mirc irc client),
that involve services. If you see the message "you
are putting a heavy load on services", you more
than likely need to reduce them, or set timers. If you're
using a script that uses a lot of services commands,
you might need to fix it, if you can't, don't use it.
What happens if I abuse services?
Simple. Either one of three main options can happen
to you. You can be placed on services ignore, killed,
or you can be akilled. You'll know if you're on services
ignore because when the next time you try to use them,
they will let you know you're being ignored.
Why is abusing services such
a big issue?
Conference Room (the software we use for our servers),
is equipped with services we use to handle things around
here better. We give you the PRIVILEGE, not the right,
to register nicknames and channels. When you abuse services,
you make work harder on us. Whether it's registering
impersonation channels, or flood registering arbitrary
nicknames for clones. We provide services for you, so
you can enjoy your stay on WebChat better, please don't
take our kindness for a weakness.
If I get punished for abusing
services how long will I be punished?
Depending on which type of punishment is used. If you
are akilled, more than likely, you will be akilled for
30 mins. Same for services ignore, unless it is a repeated
violation.
