Mark Frequently Asked Questions

What is a nickname/channel mark?
A nickname/channel mark is used by an IRC Operator (IRCop) to attach a specific piece of information to the nickname or channel. Marks are intended to make other IRCop's aware of a situation that may need dealing with, or is in the process of being dealt with. They should not be kept on a nickname or channel for a long period of time and should always be informative and professional. Having a mark on a nickname or channel will not effect the founder, channel or user's ability or accesses. Only IRCop's can see marks, not the owner of the nickname or the founder of the channel.

Why do IRC Operators mark nicknames/channels?
IRC Operators may mark a nickname or channel in order to make other IRCop's aware of a situation that may need dealing with or is being dealt with. This could range from stating the correct owner of the nickname/channel, per services logs, due to a takeover issue, or stating that the nickname/channel has previously been warned for violating network policies. Marks are always for informative, professional and relevant reasons only.

Can I see if my nickname/channel has been marked?
No. Only IRCop's can view nickname/channel marks, per the nickserv and chanserv information.

Why would my nickname/channel be marked?
As per the above questions, if your nickname/channel has been marked it is to inform other IRCop's of a recent or ongoing issue that is being dealt with or needs dealing with. A mark is not always used in a negative manner, it could be to state who the official founder of a channel is, or who the owner of a nickname is, as per services logs, due to a takeover issue. It could also be to inform IRCops that the nickname/channel has been warned previously about violating particular network policies.

How long are nicknames/channels marked for?
In most cases, the mark should be removed within 30 days of the issue being resolved. Some exceptions and leeway will be given in particular circumstances.

Who marked my nickname/channel?
We do not always disclose the name of the particular operator who marked your nickname/channel. However, some exceptions are given depending upon the circumstances.

Will you mark my nickname/channel for me?
No, we only use nickname/channel marks for informative and professional purposes.
